We are seeking classroom volunteers that are available Thursdays from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm or 9:30 am-1:30 pm. A 3-month commitment is respectfully requested. Program/Department Overview: JVS MassHire Downtown Boston is a career center that provides high-quality, customized employment & career services to job seekers, career changers, and employers. Paths to Empowerment Program is a three-week job-readiness training program at MassHire Downtown Boston that is funded by MA Access to Recovery (ATR) under the Opioid/ATR program. We assist adults with substance addiction and/or are involved with the courts to safely address barriers to employment and training. The class covers job readiness (resume, cover letter, interviewing, job searching) and career planning. Students are paid a stipend while in class. After completing the class, students have the option of either going on to further training in several occupations or finding employment. Responsibilities: The ATR Class Volunteer will perform a variety of hands-on and administrative assistance for the class: Aiding class instructor during exercises and activities. Assist clients with filling out job applications if applicable Assist in performing mock interviews Resume/Cover Letter review and preparation Providing guidance to students while performing activities using laptops or computers. Other duties as necessary or assigned Skills/Qualifications: Experience using computers and related technology and knowledgeable about major web browsers, MS-Office, Google Docs, and various online e-mail applications. Strong communication skills. Personable, patient. Capacity to display empathy toward participants. Be comfortable working with diverse populations and individuals with substance addiction and/or histories of incarceration.

Classes are on Mondays & Wednesdays from 9:30am-12:30pm. We respectfully request volunteers to volunteer one class a week. JVS is a non-profit, non-sectarian agency. Our mission is to empower individuals from diverse communities to find employment and build careers; and to partner with employers to hire, develop and retain productive workforces. JVS provides a broad range of services including adult education, skills training, job readiness training, job placement and support, and access to post-secondary education. JVS assists employers in their search for well-qualified job applicants and their initiatives to upgrade the skills of their incumbent workforce. Program/Department Overview: English for Advancement program provides vocational English classes and job search services to non-native English speakers online and in Boston whose goal is to find employment. In addition to English classes, clients receive career coaching including job search assistance, resume and cover letter writing and interview preparation. Responsibilities: Assist the teacher of vocational English class for immigrants by working with individuals and/or small groups of students in class who need extra support. The purpose of this class is to support low beginners with basic English communication and technology skills before they transition to a Zoom classroom. Topics include improving English and communication skills to obtain employment, job search and job retention techniques, orientation to the American workplace, financial literacy, and life skills. Skills/Qualifications: ESOL teaching or tutoring experience preferred, but not required. Interest in working with people of various linguistic, cultural, religious, ethnic and national backgrounds. Flexibility-responsibilities will vary on a day-to-day basis. Empathy for the challenges of learning a new culture and a new language.

JVS provides a broad range of services including adult education, skills training, job readiness training, job placement and support, and access to post-secondary education. JVS assists employers in their search for well-qualified job applicants and their initiatives to upgrade the skills of their incumbent workforce. Program/Department Overview: JVS’ Refugee Services has provided direct employment services to local refugee populations for over 40 years. These services are offered to refugees, political asylees, Cuban and Haitian entrants, certified victims of human trafficking, and other work-authorized immigrants. Services include job search assistance, resume and interview preparation, cultural orientation, pre-employment vocational English language classes, job placement and follow-up, and post-employment support. Over 80% of our participants are hired per year and our 90% job retention rate is higher than similar job placement agencies in Boston. To achieve these outcomes, JVS partners with over 1,400 employers in hospitality, retail, agriculture, education, health care, sales, manufacturing, and business; and supports participants in finding and maintaining gainful employment that can lead to successful careers. Responsibilities: Help teach in a vocational English and job readiness class for refugees, political asylees, and immigrants enrolled in a job search program. Topics include improving English and communication skills to obtain employment, job search and job retention techniques, orientation to the American workplace, financial literacy, and life skills. The volunteer will assist the classroom teacher by leading a small group of students while in class; working with individuals or pairs of students who need more intense intervention, and monitoring of whole-class activities. S kills/Qualifications: Experience teaching or tutoring ESOL (or similar) Confident and comfortable assisting learners who have limited formal education. Commitment to learning techniques for teaching and classroom management. Ability to work in dynamic and often changing work environment. Ability to work as part of a team with staff and other volunteers/interns.
