Mission Statement

The Jose Limon Dance Foundation exists today with a dual mission: first, to provide an environment and vehicle for encouraging vision and creativity in the field of dance, and second, to perpetuate and extend the vitality of the Limon legacy - a humanistic approach to movement and theater. To accomplish this, the Jose Limon Dance Foundation supports two entities, the Limon Dance Company, a performing modern dance company, and the Limon Institute, an educational and archival resource center.

Description

Acclaimed for its dramatic expression, technical mastery, and expansive, yet nuanced movement, the Limon Dance Company is now in its fifty-eighth year, demonstrating both the timelessness of Jose Limon's works and the strength of the vision that leads the Company. Founded in 1946 by Limon and Doris Humphrey, the dancers are now led by Carla Maxwell, who worked closely with Limon before becoming Artistic Director in 1978. The Limon Dance Company pioneered the idea that it was possible to survive the death of its founder, setting an example for the entire dance field. The Limon Institute directs a range of activities designed to extend the Limon heritage. In addition to licensing Jose Limon's choreographic works to dance companies and educational institutions, the Limon Institute manages New York City classes and workshops and administers the Foundation's education programs. Many of the Institute's activities are realized in conjunction with the Limon Dance Company: together, the Company and Institute ensure the continuation of the traditions and philosophies to which the Foundation is dedicated.
