The International Center in New York

The International Center is a dynamic center where immigrants, refugees, international students, and other newcomers to the United States learn English, become familiar with American culture, develop skills, and participate in social and cultural activities. Each year 2,500 members from approximately 85 countries participate in partnership programs, group discussion classes, professional and personal skills workshops, and cultural events provided by an active volunteer force of over 1,000. Through the Center, our members acquire the confidence to speak English and receive some of the support necessary to build satisfying new lives in the United States. The Center is unique because it encourages volunteers to share both their personal and professional skills in a variety of ways. In January 2005, Time Out New York selected our organization as one of the 65 best places to volunteer in NYC.

Mission Statement

Founded in 1961 to provide information and assistance to foreign visitors, the International Center has evolved into a dynamic language and learning center for immigrants, refugees, international students, and other newcomers to the United States.
