Mission Statement

The Mission of the South Carolina Vulnerable Adult Guardian ad Litem (SCVAGAL) Volunteer Program is to advocate for the best interests of abused, neglected and exploited vulnerable adults in cases brought before the South Carolina Family Courts by providing quality volunteer adult guardian ad litem (GAL) representation.

Description

South Carolina Vulnerable Adult Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Program (SCVAGAL) volunteers will receive training before performing their role as a guardian ad litem. We do trainings all over the state. After completing the training, the volunteers will be responsible for gathering information, interviewing the vulnerable adult and other involved parties and making recommendations to the court as to what is in the best interest of the vulnerable adult. The volunteers will be court appointed and will appear in court on behalf of the vulnerable adult.

In 2015 in South Carolina, there were over 4,904 reports received of vulnerable adults being abused, neglected or exploited. The South Carolina Vulnerable Adult Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Program (SCVAGAL) recruits volunteer guardians ad litem to act as unbiased representatives for vulnerable adults who are under Adult Protective Services custody in cases of abuse, neglect and exploitation.
