Friends of the San Francisco Public Library is a really great place to volunteer, especially if you are a book lover. This organization has a wide variety of volunteer opportunities, many of which have very flexible time frames. I have volunteered at the big book sales (happen twice a year at Fort Mason), at weekly $1 book sales (at the main library), and at the Book Donation Center on Treat Avenue. The big book sales are fun because there is so much going on and there is lots to do: putting out books and tidying the tables, directing shoppers, working as a cashier, and more. A great gig for someone who likes lively crowds. Working at the book donation center is really fun too. The staff is really nice and they do a great job introducing volunteers to the book sorting system and making us feel welcome and appreciated. This is the perfect opportunity for folks with a passion for order and organization. I am a regular volunteer, it is lots of fun and we always need more help.
