Mission Statement

The Beadforlife project creates economic and heartfelt bridges between the tribal people of Uganda and citizens of North America through unique, handmade jewelry. This project generates income for the beaders and their families, connecting people in Africa and North America through understanding, caring and mutual respect. Through Beadforlife we learn from each other as we develop a meaningful collaboration across the miles that separate us. We create markets together, both in Africa and North America for the beaders colorful handmade jewelry, making friendships rich in different traditions. We are all working to make a more equitable and hopeful world for all. Our method of selling this jewelry is through personal contact, woman to woman, in private gatherings in homes, Businesses, schools, conferences, concerts, fairs and farmers' markets, and through this website.

Description

Bead for Life is a business committed to social responsibility and sustainable international development. We established this as a business because we believe it is more sustainable for people to have jobs than to depend on donations from abroad, and that the opportunity to use their skills and talents further builds confidence and long term capacity. We are currently supporting 90 beaders. There are an additional 100 beaders in this community who would like to be enrolled. We pay all of our beaders fair trade prices for their products. In addition, our business donates profits back to worthy development projects in Uganda. Bead for Life currently employs a small staff, one of whom is also one of the beaders, and is learning how to run the business in Uganda while finishing school.
