Mission Statement
The Santa Fe Community Farm raises fruits and vegetables for those in need; improves the environment by soil amendment and vegetation restoration; offers opportunities for volunteerism and community service; and provides a venue for educational and community development programs.
Description
As a working model of small-scale urban food production, the Farm serves as an agricultural education center, applying appurtenant water rights to 12 agricultural acres in the high desert southwest, with a commitment to charitable donation of fresh fruits and vegetables to the hungry, homeless, and disabled of northern New Mexico. It offers to a wide variety of community groups of all ages and abilities opportunities to develop hands-on skills and capabilities in sustainable agriculture practices and natural resource conservation. The farm fosters a deeper understanding of the role of agriculture for food security and community. Volunteers come from a wide variety of groups including schools (elementary through graduate school), elderhostel, inter-faith groups, the shelters, private citizens, and individuals fulfilling court-ordered community service.
One of the oldest and last remaining farms in Santa Fe, the Farm is a rare community asset, established 60 years ago by native John Stephenson.
