Feeding America San Diego's mission is to end hunger through healthy food, education, and advocacy.
FASD is a hub for food distribution throughout San Diego County. We could not pursue our mission without a network of more than 150 partner agencies--all committed to ending hunger through collaboration, innovation, and compassionate service. Along with these dynamic community partners, FASD distributes 25 million pounds of nutritious food and fresh produce annually, the equivalent of about 23 million meals for families facing hunger from San Ysidro in the south, to Jacumba in the east, to Rainbow in the north. Each week our food reaches 56,000 children, seniors, homeless, un-employed, and other individuals facing hunger.
Our three initiatives, Feeding Kids, Feeding Families, and Feeding Seniors, comprise 9 programs: Mobile Pantry; Fresh Produce; Farm2Kids; BackPack; School Pantry; Senior Meal Mobile; Fresh Rescue; Food Stamp Outreach; and Advocacy and Nutrition Education.
FASD recognizes that distributing emergency food carries with it the responsibility to educate the community about nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices. In order to promote food literacy that will make a long-term impact on individual and community health, FASD has taken significant steps towards becoming a nutrition bank: a resource not only for emergency food, but for fresh produce, perishable protein sources, 100% fruit juices, and extensive nutrition education. FASD is working to identify at least 50 partner agencies with the capacity and interest to move into nutrition banking and become FASD’s first "Nutrition Pantry Partners." In addition to providing San Diegans with nutritious options, FASD hopes to continue increasing awareness of the importance of nutrition and exercise in overall health. The Nutrition Pantry Partner program will heighten partner agencies' sense of responsibility for distribution of healthy food and targeted, high-quality nutrition education. The opposite of hungry is not full; it is healthy. It is our goal to improve clients’ health, not just fill their tummies.
FASD was established in 2007 to bring food to San Diegans at risk of hunger. We are the only Feeding America member food bank in San Diego County. Feeding America is the nation’s largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization. There are 200 Feeding America member food banks in the U.S., with access to 2 billion pounds of donated food annually; it is a strong group of food banks held to the strictest operational and food safety standards.
FASD is proud to serve the community. We have been distributing food to San Diegans in need for four years. The food bank maintains extremely efficient operations and we pride ourselves on conscientious stewardship of resources. Our mission guides us in all of our activities and helps us make a lasting difference in the lives of as many hungry people and families as possible.
