The Shepherd's Clinic serves adults in the central Baltimore area who have no medical insurance. The patients (age 20-64 years) are ineligible for government health assistance (Child Health Insurance Program of Maryland, Medicaid or Medicare), and have too little income to afford commercial health insurance. Shepherd's is the only Clinic limiting its entire caseload to the uninsured of the Baltimore metropolitan community. These services are available through the dedication of a group of volunteers, including active and retired physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and others. 186 individuals volunteered 7,500+ hours during 2006. Last year, Shepherd's Clinic serviced over 3,400 patient visits. Through a cooperative arrangement with Union Memorial Hospital, complete medical care is available for non-homeless individuals ineligible for public assistance and within income guidelines of need. The patient population is a mixture of working poor, under- or unemployed, and marginally or temporarily disabled individuals. The Clinic enriches family life by providing a health care safety net for those heads of household or isolated adults who lack access to care that may be available for other family members. Our heritage as a church-initiated program is reflected in the warmth, caring and compassion of our volunteers and staff. Because the Shepherd's Clinic does not accept federal or state money we depend solely upon private community organizations, corporations and individuals who share our vision of providing affordable health care.
