Mission Statement

Peace Place, Inc. empowers victims, survivors, and our community to break the cycle of domestic violence through the provision of safe shelter, supportive services, and community awareness in Banks, Barrow, and Jackson counties.

Description

Peace Place was created as a safe shelter to assist battered women and their children as they rebuild their lives, independently and free of abuse. Our services are confidential and free. Our philosophy is simple - break the cycle of domestic violence. Peace Place opened its door to women and children survivors of domestic violence in June of 2000, since then, it has provided safe shelter for over 1,800 women and children.

Throughout the years following the establishment of Peace Place, the programs and services have continued to multiply. In 2007, Peace Place was able to expand its housing program to not only include an emergency shelter, but also to include transitional housing. Through an amazing donation by the Burgamy family of two houses, Peace Place was able to offer one house to a family and the second house to be shared between three women. Additionally, Peace Place undertook a huge project to create a transitional house apartment unit offering apartments to four women/ families. Through the transitional program, Peace Place is able to offer safe housing, at a reduced rent, to women for one year.

However, Peace Place offers an array of services beyond housing, including individual empowerment counseling sessions, support groups, case management, outreach advocacy, legal advocacy, financial assistance, and more.

Peace Place is a well run and very organized organization that systematically supports women in their safety, whether they choose to remain with their abuser, or to move into shelter housing. The staff are caring and hard workers and the Director has extensive experience working in several other domestic violence shelters in states around the country. The Board is well run and works hard to move the cause of ending domestic violence forward. There are dozens of ways to volunteer with Peace Place, including donating supplies, working at the thrift store, working directly with survivors, helping with the children, making renovations to the facilities, donating to the cause, etc., etc. Please consider volounteering for Peace Place as a way to support and give back to your community!
