Mission Statement

The mission of BackYard Nature Center is to promote, facilitate, and strengthen the bond between the nature environments in New Trier Township and the children and adults who wish to enrich their lives with direct experiences in nature.

Description

BackYard Nature Center (BYNC) is a not-for-profit organization which was incorporated with the State of Illinois in 2007. It received its 501(c)(3) tax exempt status from the IRS in July 2009. In its initial years, it has already reached hundreds of children and adults with its stewardship and educational programs.

It is the Center's position that exposure to natural habitat has enormous benefits - cognitive, physical, social, and spiritual - for healthy child and adult development. To connect with nature in one's literal and figurative backyard is a life-affirming experience to be shared with family and community.

My wife and I enjoyed attending one of the workdays on Saturday. The Whole Environment Was Nice And Friendly and the forest preserve authorities were very cordial. The work was fun and I am looking forward to volunteer again.

I really enjoyed attending one of the second Saturday workdays. The event was well-organized and had a friendly inviting atmosphere. What was really nice about the event was the site stewards gave instructions but weren't authoritarian or demanding. I was given the freedom to work on my own or just observe the work being done. I'm looking forward to volunteering with this group again in the future.

The people who work with BYNC are genuine, caring people who voluntarily give up their time and resources to make a difference in the north shore community. It's not just a hobby, it is a passion. Such great people that I am so glad I got to know, even though I have since moved away.
