Mission Statement

Seattle Summer Streets is a series of events occurring between the months of May and September that open up the city’s largest public space - our streets--for people to have fun, celebrate the spirit and personality of their community, discover active, healthy transportation, connect with their neighbors, and support local businesses. Each event is hosted with the help of numerous local organizations and volunteers. Seattle Summer Streets and our weekly Bicycle Sundays foster civic pride and represent community, business and government investments in Seattle’s vitality, livability, sustainability and diversity.

Description

Summer Streets is becoming a special tradition for Seattleites

A powerful idea is spreading across the world. It goes by many names.

"Ciclovia" in Bogota.

"Plages" in Paris.

"Sunday Streets" in San Francisco.

"Summer Streets" in New York City and Seattle.

The idea is simple--open a city street for several hours for people to stroll, bike, shop and just enjoy being in their community.

Something special happens during Summer Streets. A road--normally a space for vehicles--is transformed into a place. This unleashes creativity and energy within our neighborhoods. The street becomes a public plaza where people celebrate, dance, create art, play games, get to know their neighbors and enjoy their community.

It’s relaxing. It’s exciting. It just feels right. When you’re part of Summer Streets you can’t help but feel the joy and electricity of this transformation.

Summer Streets helps the public imagine a bright future where healthy transportation options and a vibrant local economy help create a wonderful quality of life. During Summer Streets you live that vision, and people want more.

Celebrating its fifth year, Summer Streets has quickly become a tradition as a special part of summers in Seattle. Local merchants and artists work together months in advance to make each event even better each year. Neighbors, families and friends mark their calendars so they don’t miss it.
