Why do people want to volunteer for Hospice? For many drawn to hospice, it is a calling. You may have had a family member on hospice or some other experience that makes you want to give back. Perhaps you are seeking a career in Healthcare. Perhaps you just understand that those who are isolated in illness, benefit from the compassionate presence of someone. Mission Hospice patient care volunteers provide patient companionship to patients, offer caregiver relief for exhausted family members, and emotional support. We are looking for those who know how to help give healing to the bereaved and/or occupy the hands of those with dementia. Hospice volunteer sewers assist with our Made with Memories Program by making Memory Bears with the clothing from a patient who died on hospice for a family member. If not a bear, we also offer families a mini-quilt made from their loved one's clothing. (36x36") Sewers have also made Fidget blankets to donate to our patient's with some form of Dementia. Our sewers go through an interview, background check, and brief introduction to hospice. Once onboarded, as orders come in for quilts or bears, our sewers assist with these. It is a wonderful part of the healing process to hold something close that reminds you of the one you lost. Volunteers have also been known to donate adult bibs, or knitted items to help with winter chill.

Veterans on hospice are a unique population. We are looking for volunteers that are active duty military or Veterans to visit our veteran patients on hospice. You could assist in a pinning ceremony to honor a veteran. You could provide support with your presence sitting bedside, reading, chatting, or watch tv. Our patients are all over San Diego County. They could be in their own home, a nursing facility, assisted living facility or living with a family member. We know that sharing an understanding of service is valuable. If you are looking to give back to veterans, to make a difference, to give to your community, please respond. We accept family (dependents) and those that are grateful to veterans for their service.

Hospice volunteers provide companionship, socialization and emotional support to patient's on hospice. They may offer caregiver relief to a family member needing a break to nap or grocery shop. Volunteers are provided training and orientation as part of the onboarding process. PPE is provided and infection control is part of training. Patient Care Volunteers provide a copy of their Covid-19 Vaccination Record. Mission Hospice patient care volunteers are part of our clinical team and play a key part on the care plan.
