The McHenry County Historical Society and Museum seeks special event volunteers to help set up and break down and work shifts at our Annual Heritage Fair (2nd Sunday in July) and Annual Cider Fest (1st Sunday in October) Volunteers are needed for the following areas: Pre-event tent set up on the Friday afternoon before the events, early morning set up on the day of the events, staffing various stations during the events, and event breakdown the afternoon of the events. The McHenry County Historical Society and Museum seeks a landscaping volunteer to help maintain select planting areas and turf at the MCHS campus in Union, Illinois. The time requirement is as-needed, mainly during the spring through fall months. The volunteer should be able to apply lawn treatments (fertilizer, crabgrass preventer, seed, etc.) and prune bushes/shrubs. Training will be made available if it is needed. The landscaping volunteer will work in cooperation with staff and other landscape volunteers. The McHenry County Historical Society and Museum is accepting applications from those interested in becoming a Museum Docent. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who enjoy being with adults and children, want to learn something new and interact with the public. Those who apply to become a Museum Docent must be available mornings for our school and adult tours. Being comfortable speaking in front of a group is a definite plus. The McHenry County Historical Society and Museum seeks volunteers to staff the Museum's reception desk from March to December. Volunteers do not need to work all of these days. The position is ideal for high school students or seniors. Dress is business casual. The primary duties for this position are to greet visitors and take admission. Those interested can work all or any days, Tuesday-Friday from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm or any/all Saturdays from 11 am - 4 pm. (No holidays). When visitor traffic is slow, volunteers can bring their laptops, read a book, work on a project/homework, or work on museum projects.

Position Title: Saturday Admission Desk Volunteer Responsibilities: Open and close the museum (turn on lights and display TVs) during Saturday hours. Greet and orient the visitors. After training, share knowledge of the museum exhibits, Harmony School, and Gannon Cabin. Daily cash and credit card handling of museum store and admissions fees. Time Commitment: Shifts are available June - October Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The shift schedule is flexible. Volunteers can pick which Saturdays to work. Perfect fit for high school or college students or retired persons. Skills and Recommended Proficiencies: Prior cash handling experience. Customer service background ideal.
