Angelita Salado had her first encounter with the American Red Cross after Hurricane Wilma struck Miami in October 2005. After an exhausting day at work she returned home to learn that the American Red Cross had provided her family with a hot meal, water and ice. “I saw my son smiling. He said we were not alone because the Red Cross was taking care of us. My son received the appropriate food needed to continue taking his medication,” said Angelita. Angelita’s family received assistance from the Red Cross until power and water services were reestablished in her home. After this experience, Angelita was determined to help the Red Cross and became a Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteer. As a DAT volunteer Angelita conducts damage assessment by interviewing those affected by a disaster and meeting their emergency needs. “The Red Cross gave me peace of mind in a time of need.
