All-Star Kids Tutoring

The ASKT program works closely with Title I schools to identify students who are behind in their grade level in reading but may not qualify for school assistance. All-Star Kids Tutoring meets weekly at sites around the Valley for 90 minutes during the school year. Each meeting includes an hour of one-on-one tutoring, a healthy snack and drink break and a group activity that reinforces literacy skills.

Working with the same student each week, tutors are able to recognize a marked improvement in the students' reading ability and confidence level. In fact, t he Virginia Piper Trust found that ASKT students made significant gains in reading compared to similar students who had not participated in the program. In addition to assisting the children academically, volunteers also serve as role models for students through their caring and consistent presence each week.

I was an All-Star Tutor from 2004-2007. I was matched with one second or third grader (who had fallen behind in reading) each school year. It was an easy and enjoyable commitment to meet at the CampoBello Elementary school library, close to my home. The first year, I tutored at the Cave Creek library All-Star Tutor location after seeing their newspaper ad. Working with the same child all year was great, because we became friends and watched each other grow--I learned a bit of Spanish and found their stories and our discussions quite charming! In addition to the easy two-hours-per-week commitment designed by the All-Star Kids organization, All-Star Kids also offers excellent preparation for new tutors and optional advanced training. They regularly emailed fun ideas, sought periodic feedback, and gave me very nice picture momentos of my kids at the end of each term.

I found ASKT four years ago on Volunteermatch.org and have been a volunteer tutor every week since then. It's an incredible experience. You're working with one child throughout the school year both one-on-one and in a group setting. What makes it so rewarding is getting to actually SEE the improvements they make because of the time you've spent with them. It's one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences I've ever had.
