TIME COMMITMENT: On call with a minimum 6 month commitment BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 25 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. SCOPE OF WORK: Volunteers will accompany the Casework Specialist in providing transportation of newly-arrived clients from the airport or other pickup location to their housing location. Volunteers must be able to pick clients up outside of regular business hours to accommodate late flight and other transportation schedules (i.e. post-10pm). RESPONSIBILITIES: * Attend Volunteer Orientation * Must undergo and pass a background check. The IRC kindly requests a $35 fee to assist in covering the cost of this requirement * Accompany Caseworker to transport newly-arrived clients from the airport or other pickup location to their housing location * Advocate for clients during delivery of needed services; represent IRC in a professional manner * Record hours and submit completed timesheet for each month via the IRC’s online Volunteer Dashboard. REQUIREMENTS: * Must be comfortable with working evenings and/or nights * Comfortable working in a multicultural environment * Flexible, able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment * Excellent written and verbal communication skills * Reliable, responsible, able to complete tasks within required time-frame * Must have a car and a clean driving record * Must be located in Charlottesville, Virginia and be willing to complete field work.

The IRC in Charlottesville Youth Mentoring program (MYVA) serves refugee youth or young adults (15-24) to help them positively navigate new communities and advance their educational and vocational goals. Adult mentors in the Charlottesville community are paired with a mentee and help guide the youth through important life transitions and decisions. Mentors can form a long-term relationship with their mentee-meeting at least once a month for a minimum of 1 year. IRC provides ongoing training and support for the Mentors in the program, with regular follow-ups to set goals and track progress. Participating in the program is expected to be a mutually beneficial and rewarding opportunity for both youth and their Mentor to build intercultural understanding and broaden cultural competency. Location: Client's home or another agreed-upon location, including virtual. Time Commitment: Minimum 1-year commitment and meet at least once a month with mentee. Responsibilities: Provide support and guidance to youth mentee in navigating their educational or career path with activities such as tutoring, helping with job applications, and networking guidance Establish good relationships with the parents/guardians of the youth and keep them informed of activities Submit time records and notes to IRC Skills/Qualifications: Must commit to one-year minimum mentorship meeting at least once a month to do an activity or check-in Must be culturally sensitive and respectful of diverse backgrounds. Must follow IRC standards and safety guidelines as outlined during IRC Volunteer Orientation Must take the lead in coordinating meetings and forming positive relationships with the youth.

SCOPE OF WORK: Volunteers will assist the Housing Specialist in providing housing related services, including helping move families from temporary housing and apartment set up. Volunteers are notified of upcoming moves and help transfer clients and belongings from temporary housing to their new apartment or house. RESPONSIBILITIES: Attend Volunteer/Intern Orientation Must undergo and pass a background check. The IRC kindly requests a $35 fee to assist in covering the cost of this requirement Possibility to conduct housing research (i.e. searching for homes on web platforms and contacting landlords) Advocate for clients during delivery of needed services; represent IRC in a professional manner Occasional transport of clients to various appointments (i.e. lease signing appointments) Occasionally shop for and set up homes for arriving cases Assist IRC staff in transporting clients and belongs from temporary to permanent housing. Record hours and submit completed timesheet for each month via the IRC’s online Volunteer Dashboard. REQUIREMENTS: Able to work with minimal supervision Comfortable working in a multicultural environment Flexible, able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment Familiarity with Microsoft Word and/or Google Platforms is preferred Excellent written and verbal communication skills Reliable, responsible, able to complete tasks within required time-frame Must have a car and a clean driving record Must be located in Charlottesville, Virginia and be willing to complete field work.

New Roots Charlottesville supports refugee food security and aids in their transition to the community through gardening, nutrition education, local food access initiatives and small business farming. IRC currently manages New Roots Farm and a few community gardens around town, in addition to providing training and support to numerous additional locations. Responsibilities: Help staff and farmers out with ongoing projects (e.g. planting, cleaning, harvesting, organizing, etc). Please bring water, gardening gloves, sun-protection, and dress for the weather. Workdays will be cancelled for inclement weather. Skills/Qualifications: Apply to be a volunteer, attend orientation, and have an interview with our volunteer coordination team Volunteers must be willing to work hard and get their hands dirty! Open to all community members (children must be supervised)
