Youth For Understanding

Youth For Understanding offers international youth exchange programs. Students aged 15-19 from around the world live with volunteer host families, immerse themselves in the local culture, and form friendships that bring countries together. As these young people discover new worlds and become part of a community in another country, they not only learn about another culture and language, they also gain perspective on the world and develop a stronger sense of self.

YFU-USA volunteers are typically the primary YFU contacts within the community. Volunteers support students, families, programs, and other volunteers in a variety of ways. From conducting student orientations to making classroom presentations, to problem solving with international students and their host families, to arranging social activities, there is truly a place for everyone with YFU USA.

YFU-USA host families have many different faces, and are all part of the American experience. Whether or not you have children, you can be a host family. If you and your family are willing to open your home and heart to a student from overseas, you and your family will gain a new global perspective, many memories, and - quite possibly - a new family member for life!

Whether you are a former exchange student, a parent, a retired person, or a college student - we welcome people of all backgrounds to join us, either as a volunteer or a host family. Whatever your skills and interests, we have an opportunity to match.

If you don't see a current opportunity listed, please contact us, as we are always accepting volunteer applications.

Would you recommend Youth For Understanding?

I hosted with YFU for two years. The students are great, but be very sure you have support close by. Don't host with YFU if you don't have a local contact. Ours was over an hour away! Also, there seems to be a lot of turnover in the higher ups. I would definitely encourage being a host parent- it was a fantastic experience I plan to do again and again!! There are lots of good groups to host with and some not so good. Check the organization out with CSIET before agreeing to host. I highly recommend CIEE by the way! :)
