When you join Ride Connection as a volunteer driver, you join an organization that keeps older adults, Veterans, and people with disabilities moving, healthy, and independent, plus you’ll make new friends in the process. It’s a simple way to make a direct impact on the lives of people in your community. Ride Connection provides half a million free rides annually to older adults, Veterans, and people with disabilities in the Portland metro area. Our mission is to link accessible transportation with community need, and we can fulfill this mission with caring volunteers like you. Our volunteer driver roles come with a lot of flexibility. You let us know when, where, and how often you would like to drive and if you would like to drive one of our cars or receive mileage reimbursement while driving your own vehicle. For the safety and comfort of our customers, we ask that volunteer drivers are able to pass a national criminal background check with fingerprinting, have a clean driving record, and be willing to learn about safety and best practices for customer service through provided training.

Meet, Salute and Drive a Veteran! Want to honor Veterans who have our served our country? Whether you are a Veteran or a non-Veteran who wants to say "thank you," we need YOU! As a Volunteer Driver, you'll take Veterans and their spouses where they need to go. You'll provide necessary life-sustaining or life-enhancing transportation in the metro area for those who are unable to drive or access public transportation. Drive your vehicle or one of Ride Connection’s. Drive as much or as little as you want! Drive in your own neighborhood or near your workplace. You'll get to know wonderful people and attend excellent trainings (which may even lower your insurance costs). Mileage reimbursement is also available if you drive your own vehicle! As a Ride Connection volunteer driver, you will create transportation access in partnership with Neighborhood House in SW Portland communities. You will be the lifeline that helps older adults, Veterans, and people with disabilities stay connected to their community and thrive. You’ll build relationships with customers, become the friendly face they look forward to seeing, and keep people moving. What you can expect from Ride Connection: A collaborative environment that supports your learning, growth, and passion Opportunities to connect and foster relationships with people in your community Training that prepares you for your volunteer work and may lower the cost of private insurance Mileage reimbursement when driving your own vehicle Recognition for your volunteer contribution What we expect from our volunteers: A dedication to supporting the needs of older adults, veterans, and people with disabilities A passion for Ride Connection’s mission, vision, values, and core accountabilities A desire to provide outstanding customer service at all times Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills Major Duties and Responsibilities: Provide safe and efficient transportation for customers to and from scheduled destinations Provide assistance to customers as appropriate Ensure passengers and belongings are properly secured within the vehicle Keep accurate records of miles driven, volunteer hours incurred, pre and post trip inspections, and other vital information Drive with a focus on safety while complying with relevant road laws, regulations, and general safety standards, including reporting injuries and vehicle damage or malfunctions

Whether you're headed to the gym, work, the doctor's office, happy hour, church, or just to spend time with friends, you can be a vital link in helping older adults and people with disabilities where they need to go, We'll send you a "care package" of Ride Connection information, flyers and postcards to share with others in the community. If you're friendly, polite, and want to help people maintain their independence, we'd love to connect with you. We want people in every neighborhood to know that Volunteer Drivers are needed. Bonus points for getting the word out on social media! Ride Connection links responsive, accessible transportation with community need. Volunteer Drivers take older adults, Veterans, and people with disabilities to medical appointments, grocery stores, senior centers, cancer treatments, dialysis, or anywhere else people need to go.
