To register as an Affirmation Bookmark Volunteer Visit: https://form.jotform.com/GirlsEmpowermentNetwork/advice-archives Girls everywhere are discovering the many ways they can explore their passions, learn new skills, and gain exposure to a diversity of career opportunities. In an effort to expose youth to as many different career paths as possible, Girls Empowerment Network has introduced a new virtual volunteer opportunity: Advice Archives ! This short video series will give youth a glimpse into the lives of relatable role models. What should be included in my video? Suggested prompts: What is the best piece of professional advice you’ve received? What is the most challenging aspect of your job and what do you enjoy most? What skills do you use most frequently in your profession? When do you feel your most powerful and confident in your work? What coping skills do you use to navigate feelings of overwhelm or stress in your position? What insight would you share with your 14-year-old self? We’d also love to ensure that the video is as visually engaging and dynamic as possible, so please feel free to include props, show examples of your work, or even share a photo of yourself from elementary, middle, or high school! Be sure to check out our YouTube channel and Volunteer FAQs for examples, tips, and guidelines! Keep in mind: Shoot in landscape mode: When shooting a video for CapCut (our recommended video editing app), it's best to use landscape mode (horizontal) instead of portrait mode (vertical). This will give you more room to work with when editing, and your video will look better when viewed on a larger screen. The target audience for your Advice Archive video will be girls in grades 6-12. Please remember to use language that is inclusive and accessible to someone as young as 11 years old. Some folks have jobs that youth will be familiar with (like Veterinarian or Dentist). Other volunteers have jobs that require more explanation, like working in Marketing or Finance... remember to keep things related to what girls know. If you’re in Marketing-can you draw correlations between what you do and advertisements they may have seen? If you’re in Finance can you help them think about their own piggy banks at home and draw basic connections to your day-to-day tasks If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your support and commitment to igniting the power in girls!

Girl Connect is Girls Empowerment Network’s weekly recurring school-based program. Each semester, Girls Empowerment Network staff, interns, and volunteers work with girls to increase their self-efficacy, resiliency, and positive connection to peers and role models. With support from the Girls Empowerment Network program staff, interns, volunteers, and peers in Central Texas, Girl Connect equips girls in grades 3-12 with the skills they need to navigate girlhood. As a Girl Connect volunteer, you will attend weekly sessions at a local school and act as a co-facilitator alongside the Girls Empowerment Network program lead, all while forming encouraging and caring relationships with the girls in the program. Volunteers lead ice breakers, activities, facilitate discussions, and provide assistance to the Girls Empowerment Network program lead on-site. As a direct service volunteer, you can choose to volunteer with Girl Connect in either of the following ways: Co-facilitate a weekly school group that takes place during the school day between 8AM-3PM and lasts for 1½ hours. Co-facilitate a weekly afterschool group that takes place between the hours of 3PM-5:45PM and lasts for 2 hours. Important notes about this volunteer opportunity: Girl Connect volunteers are required to attend a virtual Direct Service Volunteer Training (trainings for the Fall 2023 semester are available in August and September.) Volunteers are assigned to a specific school in Central Texas, Houston, or Dallas, and will be required to commit to the same time and day every week for the entirety of the semester. Girls Empowerment Network prefers that volunteers make a two-semester minimum commitment. Consistency is key for the girls we serve and we want to ensure that volunteers are able to commit to our programs and the girls they work with. We anticipate that Fall 2023 semester programming will being in mid/late August-September. To protect those we serve, Girl Connect volunteer opportunities are open only to individuals who have been vaccinated for COVID-19. If it has been more than 6 months since your last vaccination or infection, we strongly recommend that all in-person volunteers have a COVID-19 booster prior to volunteering, While on-site, masking is encouraged but not required. If you are interested/available to volunteer in-person each week with our Girl Connect program, please fill out this form https://form.jotform.com/230804555593157 Questions about this volunteer opportunity? Affirmation Bookmarks To register as an Affirmation Bookmark Volunteer Visit: https://form.jotform.com/220526741700144 Girls Empowerment Network has utilized our We Are Girls Conferences to bring our self-efficacy building curriculum to a vast number of girls at one time. This year, we are taking it on the road to help 2,000 girls across Texas plan for their futures and positively engage with their communities. Girls are looking for meaningful ways to connect now more than ever, and that’s where our volunteers come in! For girls in grades 3-12, we want to include an inspiring element of connection in our We Are Girls On The Road swag bags - Affirmation Bookmarks. So what are Affirmation Bookmarks? These bookmarks written by Girls Empowerment Network volunteers aim to inspire, encourage, and uplift girls throughout our community. Affirmation Bookmarks provide volunteers with a unique way of supporting and celebrating girls. Be sure to check out our Volunteer FAQs.This document is full of tips, guidelines, and example Affirmation Bookmarks! What should be included in my bookmarks? The bookmarks should have 8.5 inches x 2.75 inches in dimension. The bookmarks should, at a minimum, have the thickness of cardstock ( this is to ensure they are a bit more sturdy/durable than if they were written on notebook or computer paper ). However, you don’t have to use cardstock - you can use any similar material that can be found around the house/apartment, i.e. shoeboxes, cardboard boxes, etc. Volunteers are asked to write a minimum of 7-10 different bookmarks. We are currently asking for handwritten/hand decorated bookmarks as this provides a personalized and meaningful touch. We recommend taking 1-2 weeks max to complete your bookmarks. We welcome decorations, colors, markers, and stickers! We suggest using a variety of bright and bold colors. Ensure your writing is legible and use language that is accessible to young folks. Use inclusive language in your bookmarks (see our inclusive language section in the FAQs!) Steer away from language about physical attributes. Do not share identifying/personal information on your bookmark. When you have completed your 7+ bookmarks, you will mail them to: PO BOX 3122, Austin, Texas, 78764 (ATTN: Relatable Role Model Letters). Please include your first and last name in the return address area of the mailing envelope so that we can credit you for your volunteer hours! What are some creative elements that you could you include in your bookmark? Share your favorite quote celebrating the power of girls/youth. Provide a short affirmation that is uplifting. Include stickers and doodles. Draw powerful role models who have inspired you ( we’re excited to see your renditions of Michelle Obama, Frida Kahlo, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg! )
