Extra Hands for ALS

Extra Hands for ALS places students ages 16 -college in the homes of families diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). The students volunteer two hours each week or every other week. They help with house hold chores: Cleaning, dusting, yard work, watching the children, reading to the patient, playing games, computer work, what ever the family would like done and the students are willing to do. Some times it is just providing companionship to the person with ALS by sitting and talking or watching TV or movie.
Students also take part each semester in an awareness campaign that they lead or participate in. This can be done in their school, neighborhood, community or place of worship.

An adult mentor is part of the team and serves as the point person between the family and students. Introduces the students to the family, tracks volunteer hours, answers questions the students may have about the family. The mentor may choose to work along side the students in the home of the family once a month. The mentor also guides the students in planning their awareness campaign.
Students that can not commit to the weekly two hour schedule may wish to volunteer in other ways. Most schedules can be accommodated for volunteering in some capacity.
Extra Hands for ALS encourages students to use their skill sets, interests, ideas, and hobbies to further the mission of the organization. Ideas and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged.

Training is provided.

They have ceased doing this because of the downturn in the economy.
