Mission Statement

The primary purpose of the SSA is to bring about a society in which the ideals of scientific rationality and secularism flourish. In order to achieve this goal, we focus our resources on the education of college and high school students and their organizations. Our more specific goals are as follows. 1. To unite campus freethinkers and freethought groups in the pursuit of our common goals. 2. To educate student activists to effectively lead freethought organizations. 3. To raise student awareness of issues of importance to the freethought community. 4. To educate the public about the civil and free speech rights of atheists, agnostics, humanists and freethinkers. 5. To defend the right of freethinking students to organize, meet and promote their views on high school and college campuses. 6. To foster a cooperative environment where the freethought community works together to achieve shared goals. 7. To create a community in which freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and humanists feel comfortable in their unbelief. 8. To educate the public about the intellectual values of reason, the scientific method, critical thinking, skepticism and openness to new ideas. 9. To defend high science education standards. 10. To promote awareness of humanist social values including human rights, individual freedom, the common decencies and compassion for others. 11. To promote and encourage thoughtful and critical attitudes toward superstition, supernatural religious claims, pseudoscience and the paranormal. 12. To challenge misrepresentations of non-religious lifestyles. 13. To raise critical awareness of religious fundamentalism and extremism. 14. To educate the public about religious freedom and the separation of church and state.
