Middle Ground is a non-profit advocacy organization for prisoners and their families. We believe that the families of prisoners need to be empowered to participate in the political process which so forcefully affects their lives. Prisoners lose their freedom when incar- cerated. They do not lose their citizen- ship. Their families often suffer stigma when they have commited no crime at all. We perform public education, legislative advocacy and we undertake litigation on behalf of prisoners and their families.

Because not enough (if anything at all) is being done to help integrate ex-inmates back into society. It is a fact that, unless convicted felons know someone who can put them to work, they will most likely wind up back in the system because of parole/probation violations because of not finding employment. The ONLY other solution is SELF EMPLOYMENT. Without skills and/or the proper connections, they have been set up to fail before they are even released. The other thing I want to address are the number of convictions FORCED by plea agreements where the individual is innocent but lacks the proof or finances to prove it. Also, a nolo-contendre plea SHOULD NOT be the same as a GUILTY plea. There are countless circumstances in which a prosecutor his built his/her case on the lies of someone else and has NOT investigated the other side. Therefore, DOES NOT have the facts nor the truth. Yet, presents it to a judge as fact in order to WIN a conviction and promote his/her career.
