Position Purpose/Summary: Rebuilding your life in a new country is challenging, even without a language barrier. With over a hundred years of dedicated service to our neighbors in need, Catholic Charities with the crucial help of volunteers, bridge the language gap for refugees and immigrants. As a volunteer, you will support youth from refugee and immigrant families so that they become confident speakers, readers, and writers of English. Catholic Charities’ tutoring program focuses on basic vocabulary, the alphabet, numbers, and reading. By strengthening these areas, English language learners are given the foundation they need to be successful at school. Catholic Charities partners with Zablocki Community School (Milwaukee) to match English learners most in need of support with volunteers that are passionate about education. We provide training, resources, and support; however, the volunteer tutor will be responsible for teaching in a way that maximizes the student’s strengths and encourages a love of learning. Expected Availability and Commitment: Works one-on-one with a student at the student’s home, once or twice a week for 45 minutes (plus prep time) at the student's home Tutoring may occur on weekdays after school or on weekends Participate in a virtual information session and complete on-site and off-site training *Note: Due to the time it takes complete training and to find a learner who is a good match, Catholic Charities asks for a 6-month minimum commitment, ideally through the end of the school year Required Qualifications: Must be 18 years old to volunteer alone, or 16 years old to volunteer with the volunteer’s parent present Must be comfortable driving to a student’s home in the Milwaukee area (typically on the southside of Milwaukee) Comfortable communicating in English to speakers of various levels- English speakers of all levels are welcomed and encouraged to apply Required Training: Volunteers will receive training before being matched with a student. They will also have ongoing educational opportunities to enhance their teaching techniques. This includes: periodic check-ins, newsletters, and virtual Volunteer MeetUps that enable collaboration among volunteers and sharing of educational resources. Slide decks are provided for the first 16 weeks and then support is provided so that volunteers can create their own lessons. Helpful Skills for the Role: People who were English language learners as children themselves or grew-up in immigrant families are encouraged to apply No previous experience is necessary; training is provided. Teaching, tutoring, cross-cultural experiences or additional language skills are a plus Additional language ability is welcomed Share your existing skills and experience with your learners. As a volunteer, you will support an adult learner from a refugee or immigrant family so that he or she becomes a confident speaker, reader, and writer of English. We focus on fundamental literacy skills for English language learners facing barriers to attending traditional English classes, such as transportation or childcare. Our program is learner-focused and seeks to build upon the different strengths that learners bring with them. Often, their goals range from: scheduling a doctor’s appointment, reading their bills, asking their child’s teacher questions, going shopping, or even reading a bedtime story in English to their child. The curriculum gives volunteers the structure they need to meet these goals. By strengthening these areas, English language learners are given the foundation they need to be successful. Position Purpose/Summary: Many refugees and immigrants dream to obtain citizenship in the United States enabling them many opportunities that they otherwise would not have, including: (1) the right to vote; (2) securing United States citizenship for their children; (3) traveling with a United States passport; (4) new opportunities for employment; (5) eligibility for scholarships for their children’s education; and (6) applying for a wider range of family members to join them in the United States. There are many requirements to become a citizen and preparing by yourself can be overwhelming! With over a hundred years of dedicated service to our neighbors in need, Catholic Charities with the crucial help of volunteers, partner with refugees and immigrants on the path to citizenship. The Citizenship Volunteer provides vital support to immigrants studying for citizenship exam. You will work with learners to memorize the 100 Civics Questions on the citizenship exam, learn how to respond confidently to questions on the citizenship application (please note, you are not responsible for filling this form out with your learner), and pass the reading and writing requirement. Expected Availability and Commitment: 1-2 hours per week; most learners ask for 45 minutes to 1-hour sessions, once or twice a week at the learner’s home Schedules are determined based on both the learner’s and the volunteer’s availability; people meet during the week and weekend, in the mornings, afternoons, or early evenings A volunteer may work with one learner individually or a few in a small group Participate in a virtual information session and complete online training modules *Note: Due to the time it takes complete training and to find a learner who is a good match, Catholic Charities asks for a 6-month minimum commitment Required Qualifications: Must be 18 years old to volunteer Must be comfortable driving to a learner’s home in the Milwaukee area (typically on the southside of Milwaukee) Comfortable communicating in English to speakers of various levels- English speakers of all levels are welcomed and encouraged to apply Required Training: Volunteers will receive training before being matched with a learner. Virtual Opportunity
Position Purpose/Summary: Rebuilding your life in a new country is challenging, even without a language barrier. With over a hundred years of dedicated service to our neighbors in need, Catholic Charities with the crucial help of volunteers, bridge the language gap for refugees and immigrants. As a volunteer, you will aid Catholic Charities make culturally and linguistically appropriate videos lending your critical language skills to help immigrants understand the myriad of legal and practical considerations when applying for asylum in the United States. To provide answers to immigrants’ questions about applying for asylum, you will translate one or more pages of English text on short scripts and record voice-over videos in a language which represents Catholic Charities’ linguistic needs. The videos are approximately 1-5 minutes long in the language you speak. The scripts are simple for ease of translation. Catholic Charities trains you to record short videos that are recorded in your own home or at one of Charities’ offices to record. If needed, Catholic Charities’ Community Educator will join you via Zoom to record the first video(s) together. Catholic Charities edits and posts the recordings to YouTube and TikTok. ***Please, only United States Volunteers. Catholic Charities is unable to work with volunteers who live outside of the United States for this opportunity, as knowledge of local culture and resources are an important part of the role. Expected Availability and Commitment: A minimum of 2-8 hours per month to create 1-3 videos Occurs any time of the day or week at home Volunteers who wish to work at Catholic Charities’ office for the recordings will come during working hours from Monday through Friday beginning at 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM *Note: Catholic Charities asks for a 6-month minimum commitment Required Qualifications: Must be 18 years old to volunteer Comfortable communicating in the language you will be translating Catholic Charities top language needs include the following: Spanish, Chinese, and Haitian Creole Comfortable communicating in English (reading, writing, and speaking)- English speakers of all levels are welcomed and encouraged to apply * Note: If you speak a language that is not on this list, contact Catholic Charities to determine if your language is a need or fulfills the need of a different project Required Training: You will receive training on how to access materials before you begin. Virtual Opportunity

As a volunteer, you will aid Catholic Charities make culturally and linguistically appropriate videos lending your critical language skills to help refugees navigate Welcome Corps. Welcome Corps is a new refugee sponsorship program that enables refugees to bring their friends and family to the United States. To provide answers to refugees’ questions about the new program, you will translate English text (either on PowerPoints or short scripts) and record voice-over videos in a language which represents Catholic Charities’ linguistic needs. These videos cover important topics on how to apply for Welcome Corp so refugees can be reunited with their loved ones. Each script for translation is about 1 page of English text which you will translate into the language you speak as a 1-3-minute-long recording. We prefer audio recordings accompanied by video, but audio-only is acceptable. In addition, volunteers may choose to translate a longer PowerPoint "Information-Session" presentation which accumulates to a 30-45-minute recording. Longer recordings can be translated and recorded in real-time with an English speaker over a Zoom call (PowerPoint sent in advance), or screen-recorded separately on the volunteer’s own digital device. Catholic Charities trains you to record videos within your own home or at one of Charities’ offices to record. If needed, Catholic Charities’ Community Educator will join you via Zoom to record the first video(s) together.
