Description

We are a not-for-profit (501c-3) tax-exempt agency funded by private donations. In 2008-09 we spent over $525 million nationwide for research, professional/public education, community service programs.

Our 10-year impact goal: By 2020, to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent.

Heart disease continues to be the No. 1 killer in the U.S. Stroke is the No. 3 killer and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the U.S.

Our cause initiatives:

  • Go Red For Women: recognize/reduce risk of CVD. National Wear Red Day: first Friday in February (American Heart Month)
  • Power To End Stroke: help African Americans recognize/reduce their high risk of stroke. May is American Stroke Month.
  • Start!: help employers create culture of physical activity in workplace. National Start! Walking Day: first Wednesday in April.
