The Experience Gallery is a museum space where guests have an opportunity to touch and play instruments from around the world. Whether playing a Theremin alone or participating in an impromptu drum circle with others, guests can choose how they spend their time in the Experience Gallery. Volunteer Team Members foster a welcoming, positive, and safe environment for all guests. Being a musician is not required to become an Experience Gallery Guide. Training is provided so you can learn about the instruments and be given tips on how to create a supportive and educational atmosphere. Time Commitment Being an Experience Gallery Guide at MIM is a flexible commitment. Volunteer Team Members choose their schedule based on their needs and convenience. MIM Gallery Guides are outgoing, friendly, enthusiastic, and act as the public face of the Museum by creating a welcoming, accessible, safe, and secure environment. Gallery guides greet guests, assist with wayfinding, and provide general interpretive services while strolling about various galleries. Gallery Guides also ensure guest safety and security of exhibits. Duties may include, but are not limited to: Greet guests and provide assistance including directional information (ie: location of specific exhibits, restrooms). Respond to frequently asked questions regarding MIM and various exhibits in which you are stationed. Work in conjunction with museum security to protect items in the exhibits. Being a MIM Gallery Guide is a flexible commitment. As a Volunteer Team Member, you can choose your own schedule based on your needs and convenience. A Guest Service Guide is friendly, enthusiastic, detail-oriented and supports the Guest Service Department in creating a positive guest experience. This volunteer position offers the perfect chance to close a guest’s visit - you can chat briefly with guests about what they enjoyed most and let them know about upcoming events for their next visit! Duties include, but are not limited to: Assist with the re-staging of the guidePORT system by plugging the units into chargers, cleaning headphones, and properly storing the units. Greet guests and provide them with directional information (ie: location of café, restrooms, etc). Respond to guests general questions including questions about MIM history, policies, and guidePORT system use. Time Commitment Being a Guest Service Guide at MIM is a flexible commitment. MIM seeks fun, imaginative, and enthusiastic Volunteer Team Members to provide guided tours scheduled for school and youth groups. Museum Guides encourage guests to forge their own connections to Museum collections and stories. You don’t need a musical or teaching background to apply - training covers everything a guide needs to know! STEP 1: Apply now by going to mim.org/volunteer. Application deadline is September 12, 2023. STEP 2: Attend an orientation for new volunteers and a meet-and-greet for museum guide candidates. STEP 3: Complete a 5½ week initial training. Fall 2023 training dates are October 12 - November 16, Mondays and Thursdays from 8:30am-12:30pm. STEP 4: Lead fun, engaging tours of MIM galleries for children of all ages. Following the training, museum guides commit to a minimum of three tours per month. If you have questions, email volunteer@MIM.org. The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) is a non-profit organization that enriches the world by collecting, preserving, and making accessible a wide variety of musical instruments and performance videos from every country in the world. We offer our guests a welcoming and fun experience, incomparable interactive technology, dynamic programming, and exceptional musical performances. MIM also fosters appreciation of diverse cultures around the globe by showing that we all innovate, adapt, and learn from each other to create music-the language of the soul. Volunteer team members play an integral role in ensuring that MIM achieves its mission of fostering an appreciation for the incredible musical similarities and unique differences of diverse cultures throughout the world. Student volunteers have the opportunity to develop professional skills within a museum setting and join a growing community of individuals who appreciate music, education, museums, and the arts. As a whole, student volunteers are needed in a variety of capacities, including at Guest Service, in the Galleries, and at special events.
