Get On the Bus is a statewide effort to unite children with their parents in prison. get On the Bus provides free transportation, meals and activities the enable children to visit seven prisons throughout California on the Friday and Saturday before Mother's and Father's Day. get on the Bus also raises public awareness of the plight of children of incarcerated parents by coordinating a media campaign to highlight the event in print and broadcast media. The Program Utilizes a grassroots, self-organizing service model to mobilize local teams of volunteers who organize fundraising and program activities in their own communities.
"Even though she's in prison, she's still in my heart. It's been four years since I've seen her and I'm so happy."-Michael, age 10
Why do the children need transportation?
Children with a parent in prison are usually cared for by relatives, often grandparents. Many caregivers are unable to make the drive due to long distance or expense. Get On the Bus offers a priceless opportunity-a mother's touch, a father's hug, a family photo, a private conversation and a connection to hope and healing.
