Liberation Through Education's free, in-school A-Z Programs teach children the life skills they need to become contributing members of society. Our programs include: A. Workshops on Etiquette/Manners - 4-Part , 4-One hour Class Series Workshops. Each of the 4-Part series are presented over 4 consecutive weeks. Each of the 4 Parts are independent of each other and may be presented in any order. Presented to boys and girls separately. (4th-8th grades) B. "Swagger Like Us" Workshops - 4-Part series defines manhood/womanhood, discusses acceptable behavior and appropriate interaction between genders, analyzes traditional gender roles and challenges constructs of male/female roles in society. Presented to boys and girls separately. (5th-8th grades) C. Lecture on Bullying/ Being Bullied - lecture that exposes the characteristics, effects and motivations of, and dispels the myths about bullying. (Information presented on basis of age and content appropriateness, PreK-8th grades) D. Athlete Appearances - appearances are scheduled for large groups of students, usually 3-5th graders and 6-8th graders, and are coordinated with an "Essay Lottery." All students who submit an essay that adheres to the specified guidelines are eligible for a chance to win prizes, such as sports memorabilia, game tickets, etc. in the "lottery." E. Local Celebrity/Public Service Personnel Appearances - appearances/presentations by local politicians, reporters, radio personalities, firefighters, police officers, etc. are scheduled in small groups of students, usually 1-2 classes of a single grade. Students are taught the "ins and outs" of careers in New Orleans. F. Creative Writing Workshop - workshop offered for three genres: fiction, non-fiction and poetry/riddles and are presented on a "sign-up" basis (5-8th grades) G. "Analyze What You Listen To" Workshop - interactive workshop offers a comprehensive analysis of the lyrics, cause/effect, and message of students' favorite songs (4th-8th grades) H. *Weekly 15-minute Mentoring Sessions - topic lectures are presented weekly to mixed gendered classes in 15-minute sessions by experienced, professional social workers, youth counselors and behavioral therapists. Topics include, but are not limited to, Handling Peer Pressure, Alternatives to Violence/Conflict Resolution, Bullying/Being Bullied, Self-Esteem/Confidence Building (6th-8th grades) *Lectures are developed and/or customized in response to concerns relayed by the school's representative(s), issues of violence, dysfunction, etc. in the media and/or among peers, and students' requests, and completed surveys from students, teachers and school representative(s). I. Internet Safety Seminar - seminar discusses the ways to stay safe and avoid predators on the Internet. Students and teacher are given resources and information for reporting Internet inappropriateness and unsolicited contactors (3nd-8th grades) J. Pre-Adolescent to Puberty Seminar for Boys- 2-hour seminar discusses the adolescent changes that occur in boys pre-puberty into adulthood. Male anatomy and hormonal changes and sexuality are also covered. (For boys 5th-8th grades) K. Pre-Adolescent to Puberty Seminar for Girls - 2-hour seminar discusses the adolescent changes that occur in girls pre-puberty into adulthood. Female anatomy, hormonal changes and menstruation are also covered. (For girls 4th-8th grades) L. Personal/Dental Hygiene Seminar - seminar discusses the proper ways to take care of your body and teeth. Demonstrations and activities are used to reinforce the information provided (Age appropriately presented, PreK-8th) M. Proper Nutrition Seminar - seminar teaches basic nutrition facts, how to read the food labels and how to determine desirable caloric intake (Age appropriately presented, PreK-8th grades) N. "Good Touch/Bad Touch" Seminar - seminar creates awareness of what "private parts" are for girls and boys and teaches children that his/her body is their own using a book on the topic and interactive discussion (Grade Groups: PreK-3rd) O. "Dream Engineering" Workshop - 4-Part series offers a step-by-step process for accomplishing goals. Whether you want to stop biting your nails or become the President of the United States, this process can get you there (Age appropriately presented 4th-8th grades) P. "Breakfast with Books" - students snack while a guest reader presents the "Lesson Book of the Month," followed by an interactive discussion on the book's lesson (Grade Groups: PreK-K, 1st-2nd, and 3rd-4th Q. "3 Healthy Meals in the Microwave & Toaster" Workshop - workshop that teaches how to prepare a nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinner using the microwave or toaster (Preparation difficulty varies according to grade group, 2nd-8th grades) R. Checking/Saving Acct Mgmt. Workshop - workshop teaches the basic structure of checking/savings acct. and how to reconcile, deposit, write checks and manage these accounts. (6th-8th grades) S. Rising Stars 12-Week Series Workshop - designed to help today's youth develop their personal leadership skills and begin to set goals and directions for their lives at an earlier age. (4th-8th grades) T. Art, Music, and Dance Workshops - workshops that build confidence and evoke creativity and facilitated by local instructors in each field. (PreK-8th grades) U. Sports Clinics - series sessions in baseball, football and soccer by local coaches/athletes/sports instructors to teach the fundamentals of each sport. (5th-8th grades) V. Development of Monthly/Quarterly School Newsletter - program involving interviewing students, teachers, principals, etc. gathering school news, announcing important school events, etc.; school newsletter encourages a positive outlook on education and a teamwork environment (6th-8th grades) W. Dogs 101 Seminar - seminar that teaches students tips on avoiding being attacked by a dog, how to touch, handle and interact with a dog, and offers resources for reporting dog abuse, neglect, strays, etc. X. Green Kids Seminar - seminar that teaches the importance of recycling, preserving and conserving. Students are given tips on "going green" and how to get others to go green. They are also compelled to action by statistics and facts about how their contribution can make a difference. Y. Garden of "School Name" - project entails growing and maintaining a vegetable or flower garden on school grounds. Students of the highest grade in the school nurture the garden. Z. Exploring Emotions - performance with puppets that discusses , analyzes and offers ways of dealing with emotions (PreK-3rd)
