Description

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

  • the Austin Metro area is home to the second-fastest growing population of seniors in the country?
  • recently, approximately 1 in 3 AUSTIN seniors reported feeling lonely, anxious, and/or experienced depressive disorder symptoms?
  • on average, seniors make three times as many visits to the doctor as people between the ages of 22-44?
  • it is predicted that by 2050, less than 50% of Central Texas senior adults will have adequate access to public transit?
  • roughly 40% of Travis County seniors are malnourished or at risk for malnourishment?

Founded in 1985, Drive a Senior-ATX is a local non-profit that provides free transportation and other support services to home-bound isolated senior citizens. The two main goals of our agency are to provide Austin seniors with easy access to both medical care and healthy food options.

Volunteering with us is easy! There are no minimum time commitments, and you schedule yourself using your smart phone or computer. Completion of a 30-45 minute training/registration is all you need to get started; we even pay for your background check!

I love working here AND volunteering here. It's so easy to pick up rides for our senior clients in my free time on the weekends. I have so much fun and adore the relationships I have built!

I have been a volunteer driver with Drive a Senior - West Austin since the late summer of 2009. I usually drive once a week, taking clients to medical, rehabilitation, and beauty appointments. Occasionally I help with grocery shopping. Through this opportunity, I've met a number of engaging, bright people, learned a lot about Austin's services for seniors, and actively enjoyed a number of clients' company. Most of the people I drive live within three miles of my home, so I feel as if I'm assisting neighbors. I choose the day and time of each volunteer drive, so the task fits into my schedule easily. The organization's staff is friendly, helpful, and well-organized.
