Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas (Austin)

For more than 40 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas has been pairing children, ages 6-16 with supportive adult mentors who build friendships and offer encouragement and support to each child. Our one-to-one mentoring model helps kids facing adversity achieve measurable outcomes leading to lifelong success.

Our Impact: In 2011 alone, our volunteers will provide 90,000 hours of mentoring to 1,500 children in Travis, Williamson and Hays counties. The value of that time is nearly $2 million! Even more impressively, last year more than 97 percent of the children we served stayed in school, improved their grades and avoided early parenting. We also are proud to boast that in 2011, we awarded $190,000 in scholarships funds to 95 graduating seniors while also promising 156 younger students a $2,000 scholarship to use upon graduation.

Our Investment: BBBS is a donor-supported mentoring organization. The cost of supporting a match for one year is $1,300, or $108 per month. Compare that to $99,000 a year - the cost of incarcerating one child in a Texas Youth Commission facility. Our program is a great investment which provides a safer community, better prepared workforce and more responsible, productive citizens achieving lifelong success.

Mission Statement

The BBBS mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
