Big Brothers and Big Sisters is matching up volunteers (Bigs) and children (Littles) to spend 8 hour more hours monthly together based on interests, location, and personality. Bigs will spend one-on-one quality time with the Littles to promote social skills, relationships, and development through experiences and relationship building. Bigs are prohibited from the use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs in the presence of the Little and must not live with someone who is involved with any illegal activity or drug use. Additionally, overnight stays and over-involvement are not allowed. Bigs will spend time with a child doing free or low-cost activities of mutual interest while fostering creative thinking, social relationship building, and experience. Bigs will need to confer monthly with an assigned staff member to ensure the match is productive, safe, and positive. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay provides both children and mentors the essential tools to develop lifelong, purposeful relationships and serves more than 2,400 children in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Pasco, Citrus, Hernando, Sumter, Alachua & Marion counties. Their mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Polk County Emergency Management is seeking an individual interested in entering the field to assist Emergency Management staff with programs and special assignments for one semester. If completing this internship for academic credit, all required documents must be provided prior to your first scheduled day. An intern in this assignment will be involved with disaster preparedness projects, meetings, meeting prep, mitigation, response, and recovery efforts. Additionally, interns will learn about the comprehensive emergency management plan, disaster shelter registration and follow-ups, weather advisory and related studies, and the different emergency support functions and how each works independently and collaboratively. Interns who are eligible to drive must be available to the the county's defensive driving course offered by Polk County's Risk Management in Bartow. Polk County Emergency Management is responsible for planning and coordinating actions to prepare, respond, and recover from natural or man-made disasters in Polk County. It manages the County Emergency Operations Center, which is the central coordination facility for all disasters. It also plans and conducts emergency training and serves as a liaison with state and federal emergency agencies. Emergency Management also partners to produce the Polk County's annual Hurricane Shelter Map, Hurricane Shopping List, and educational events to help citizens prepare themselves for a potential disaster.

The Bartow History Center is looking to bring on students seeking an internship focusing on Collections Management duties with the museum Curator. This internship will be scheduled for 20-32 hours per week for one semester. If completing this internship for academic credit, all required documents must be provided prior to your first scheduled day. The Collections intern will assist in overseeing the arrangement, cataloguing, and exhibition of collections and help to maintain records and account for objects utilizing computers and digital imaging. They will also handle objects for the purpose of documentation, display, or safekeeping. Research will be involved on collections related topics. What was once the Polk County Courthouse now serves as the History Center and houses the historical museum and library. The museum serves Polk's community through educational programs, special events, and volunteer opportunities. The museum's exhibits and programs continue to grow and change and there is always something new to discover. The museum collection includes natural and cultural objects related to Polk and the greater Central Florida area that represent our history from pre-Columbian to present day eras. The artifacts on display at the museum represent individuals, cultural groups, and events significant to the region.

This includes cash and credit transactions, intaking and processing donations, maintaining the workspace, basic register functions, and assisting customers. Founded in 1984, the Women’s Resource center continues to assist families in crisis throughout Polk County providing mentoring, financial literacy, job coaching, mental health counseling, emergency utility assistance, housing assistance, and food from their pantry.

Polk County's Nature Discovery Center is offering an internship in environmental sciences. Interns are provided with a diverse combination of experience opportunities related to the specialties of Environmental Education and serving as a Field Technician. This internship is scheduled for any two (2) days between Tuesday and Saturday for a minimum of 4 hours each day for one semester. If completing this internship for academic credit, all required documents must be provided prior to your first scheduled day. Environmental Education Section - Interns will assist with attending elementary school groups, create exciting hands-on curriculum design to be utilized with students, and provide environmental education presentations/information to the general public. Field Technician Section - Interns will assist with rare species and habitat monitoring and learn basic land management techniques such as treating invasive species - prescribed fire, and general stewardship of environmental lands. Polk's Nature Discovery Center is located at the Circle B Bar Reserve. The free discovery center has exhibits specifically designed to engage and excite visitors of all ages. It is a place to explore Polk's water, wildlife, and wilderness and gain a better understanding of the delicate ecosystems of Central Florida. There are numerous hands-on indoor and outdoor exhibits, picnic facilities, and nature trails, making it a great choice for families.
