A Guardian Ad Litem is a court appointed volunteer who acts as an advocate for a child in foster care and represents them in court, by letting the judge know how the child is doing in foster care and their needs and wishes. The GAL works directly with children in foster care to ensure they are safe, healthy and their needs are being met. A GAL will also gather information from medical providers, therapists, teachers and other stakeholders in the child's life to make recommendations for their needs. A GAL may also provide support to parents/families as they complete their case plan and work towards reunification. The goal is reunification of a child with their family and a GAL helps facilitate that process in a manner that advocates for both the child's best interest and their wishes.

The 12th Judicial Circuit Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) program recruits, trains, supports and supervises court-appointed volunteers to represent their most vulnerable children. A Guardian Ad Litem is a unique concept in the juvenile court system: a trained and certified community volunteer appointed by the judge to speak up for an abused or neglected child in court. The GAL acts as the vital information link between the court and the child, making independent, objective recommendations regarding the child's best interests. GAL volunteers receive in-depth training on the court process, child development, abuse and neglect, cultural differences, advocacy, interviewing techniques and social service education. The goal is for every child to have representation; every child deserves a Guardian ad Litem.

GAL volunteers are representatives for children before the Court, social service agencies and the community. They meet with the child and adults in their lives. The GAL collects and examines records from many sources and speaks for the best interests of the child in Court and prepares a written report for the Court.
