Mission Statement

The Gathering Place is Denver’s only daytime drop-in center for women, children, and transgender individuals who are experiencing poverty or homelessness. MISSION: We are a community of safety and hope where positive relationships, choice, and essential resources transform lives.

Description

The Gathering Place (TGP) was founded in 1986. We offer a safe, daytime shelter with services and programs that meet basic needs, provide resources for personal growth, and build a hopeful community. During the fiscal year that ended September 30, 2015, a total of 7,952 individuals visited The Gathering Place 61,071 times.

Volunteers are our partners in care, advocacy, and community building who contributed 15,000 service hours to The Gathering Place last year. Our volunteers remind the women, children, and transgender individuals we serve that there are people in the larger community who care deeply about issues of equity, poverty, and homelessness.

We offer educational opportunities, long-term placements, student internships, and off-site options for both individuals and groups. Matching our needs with a volunteer’s gifts and sharing information about poverty and homelessness is the primary purpose of our volunteer process.

Our volunteers serve in many ways.

Weekly volunteers:

  • Prepare and serve meals
  • Organize and distribute items from our food pantry
  • Tutor in the GED Program
  • Support clients accessing our Computer Lab

Episodic and/or group volunteers:

  • Sponsor and prepare meals
  • Organize donation drives for essential needs
  • Facilitate card sales for The Card Project
