Alexandria City Public Schools

Alexandria City Public Schools is an urban K-12 public school system with 16 schools and 11,000 students. Alexandria operates twelve elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (6-8), one ninth grade school, and one large senior high school, T.C. Williams (l0-12) with more than 2,000 students. Of the nine school districts in Northern Virginia, Alexandria has the highest number of young people (12-17 years) living below the poverty line. The percentage of students who receive free or reduced price meals has grown from 34% in l986 to 52% in 1999.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Volunteer Program is to promote and encourage the involvement of the community in improving student achievement and school programs by encouraging and providing volunteer opportunities in Alexandria's schools.
