Compeer matches trained volunteers in one-to-one friendships with children and adults receiving treatment for mental illness and emotional disturbances. Compeer brings the simple premise of friendship into the complex area of mental illness. Compeer began in Rochester, New York in 1973 and now consists of 122 international affiliates. Compeer of Birmingham has been making friendship matches for four years.
