Mission Statement
THE HOME TEAM is a collection of academic and sports leaders who work together with at-risk youth in Miami-Dade County using the life skills of athletics to advance young athletes on the field, in the classroom and within their community to prepare them for college and beyond.
Description
Our current participants are 6-12th graders in the Coconut Grove, South Miami and Overtown communities.
This past academic year, we created an after school study hall/tutoring program at Ponce De Leon Middle School and Coral Gables Senior High School. In addition we provided one-on-one tutoring to high school students at New World School of the Arts who are residents of the Coconut Grove Community. These tutoring sessions took place on the University of Miami campus.
Our program rewards our student participants based upon their commitment to the program through attendance and participation, and by their academic improvement. Rewards currently include snacks or meals during our study hall/tutoring program, educational field trips, special guest speakers, and year end prizes. We also provided sponsorships to local youth sports leagues, camps and clinics with The Home Team covering all registration fees and associated costs.
