Hitchcock Natural Areas Management Volunteer

Help protect our natural resources including the globally significant Loess Hills with our Natural Areas Management Volunteers at Hitchcock Nature Center. Work to minimize the impact of invasive plant species while re-introducing native plants to the hills, clearing trees to widen trails, check for erosion and assist with various land management projects. Get hands on experience and training in the field of natural areas management.

Hours vary according to season & staff availability, opportunities may not be available on a regular basis.

Mission Statement

Pottawattamie County Conservation provides meaningful experiences for people of all ages with the unique natural resources of Pottawattamie County through diverse and sustainable education, recreation and conservation opportunities.

Description

Since 1955, the Pottawattamie County Conservation Board has acquired eight parks and natural areas encompassing 1,661 acres across the county, including the award-winning Hitchcock Nature Center. With more than 90,000 visitors a year, the Pottawattamie County parks and natural areas showcase the county's diverse landform and variety of outdoor activities.

Major recreation areas within the Pottawattamie County system include Arrowhead Park, Botna Bend Park, Hitchcock Nature Center, Narrows River Park and Old Town Park. These parks offer more than 100 campsites; six camping cabins; three enclosed lodges perfect for corporate outings, family reunions and small weddings; open and enclosed shelters for warm season gatherings; and miles of trails for hiking, biking, backpacking and walking. Visitors have the opportunity to camp, fish, hike, boat and interact with wildlife while at Pottawattamie County parks.
