Mission Statement
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
Description
As the largest humanitarian organization in the US, the American Red Cross depends on volunteers to accomplish its mission. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies solely on donations of time, money, and blood to support the communities in which it serves. The Cape Fear Chapter, the oldest chapter in NC, supports five counties in the southeastern region of the state: New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick, Duplin and Columbus. Critical volunteer needs exist in the following areas:
Health and Safety Services: Volunteers provide educational instruction and support with classes that prepare students to save lives in emergency situations. Coursework includes CPR, 1st Aid, Lifeguard and Babysitter Training.
Blood Services: Volunteers support the many critical mobile blood drives held in our 5 counties by assisting with blood drive schedules, donor recruitment, and the greeting and hosting of donors at the events.
Disaster Services: When local disasters strike, our volunteers stand ready to help those affected to rebuild their lives. Volunteers are assigned to the scene of local and national disasters such as residential fires, tornadoes, and hurricanes, assisting clients to obtain what they need most, such as temporary shelter, food, clothing, medications and mental health support.
Administrative Services: Volunteers provide administrative support in such areas as staffing, training, accounting and public relations.
Services to the Armed Forces: Volunteers provide assistance with local military events for which the chapter participates.
The Red Cross provides a variety of training and development programs to ensure that our volunteers are prepared to effectively perform their responsibilities with confidence and enthusiasm.
