lowernine.org has on-going volunteer opportunities for those who are willing to work hard and are looking to make a difference. We provide all necessary project training, tools and safety equipment and we don't expect you to arrive in New Orleans with any previous construction experience. We simply ask all volunteers to be both willing and physically able to learn new rebuild skills.
The large majority of our work is focused on rebuilding homes destroyed by the flooding that followed Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Our projects range widely, but include the following: repairing roofs, framing walls, assisting licensed electricians and plumbers, installing windows and doors, hanging drywall, mudding and sanding drywall, installing kitchen cabinets and countertops, cutting and laying tile, interior painting, replacing damaged siding, exterior scrapping and painting and yard work.
We work Mon-Fri 8-5. In order to participate in rebuild activities, volunteers should commit to a minimum of three full days of work. We are usually able to arrange community support projects for those who can only commit a day or two. We will arrange half-day or weekend projects for large groups whenever possible.
If you think you may be interested in joining us for hands-on work in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, please carefully review the Volunteer page of our website and complete the Group Application there.

Mission Statement
lower nine. org is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization involved in the long-term recovery of New Orleans’ historic Lower Ninth Ward from Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaches of 2005.
Description
lowernine.org is dedicated to training residents of, and volunteers in, the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, LA, in the skills necessary to bring this century-old historic neighborhood back to life after the devastation wrought by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. These skills include basic carpentry, roofing, plumbing, electrical wiring, sheetrock finishing, tiling, etc., which are needed if houses are going to become habitable once again. Additionally, we participate in activities that benefit the neighborhood as a whole, such as lot clearing, an annual blight survey, and assessing city services. On top of that we enhance food security in the area through our food pantry.
