Want to help make a difference in the life of a refugee?
RefugeeOne seeks volunteer mentors to help newly arrived refugee adults become self-sufficient and acclimate to a new culture. Mentors help by making a home visit once a week to teach English, play games, show refugees how to ride public transit, and be a supportive teacher, advocate and friend.
This volunteer experience is a remarkable exchange, for you both have many things to teach one another. We expect mentors to see their partners once a week for a minimum of 6 months, maintain contact with RefugeeOne through monthly reports, and participate in occasional trainings. In-home mentoring schedules are flexible and sessions may occur mornings, evenings, or weekends.
To apply, fill out an application on our website or email volunteer@refugeeone.org.
RefugeeOne, located in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, has a national reputation for its success in assisting refugees fleeing war and persecution as they build new lives. With the help of 1000 volunteers, RefugeeOne walks alongside refugees as they take their first steps on the road to self-reliance: we greet new arrivals at O’Hare Airport, furnish their homes, help them learn English, and connect them to their first jobs. However, we recognize that job skills aren’t the only component to success in the United States, which is why we provide mental health care, after-school programming, and community-building services as well. Our ultimate goal is to help refugee families become self-reliant in as little as 6-12 months.
