Mission Statement

Our mission is to serve the Southeast Valley communities of Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert and Tempe by bringing together adult students who lack basic literacy skills and/or who are English language learners with volunteer tutors.

Description

Mesa Adult Literacy Council (MALC) is an all-volunteer non-profit organization founded in 1983 under the name Mesa Laubach Literacy Council.
Volunteer tutors are given an initial training conducted by a ProLiteracy certified trainer. They are provided with free teaching materials and access to a well-stocked MALC library. Tutors are asked to make a commitment to work with their students for 2-3 hours per week for at least 6 months. Most of the tutors work with a student one-on-one, but some teach small groups. Tutors meet with students at public libraries or other public venues. Tutors work with students on reaching specific goals, which can be attaining citizenship, raising literacy levels to be able to take GED classes, getting a job or a better one, helping their child with schoolwork, etc. MALC is an affiliate of ProLiteracy (proliteracy.org).
