Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue is the first, and one of the only, horse rescues devoted specifically for draft breed horses. Our horses are rescued primarily from slaughter, many after serving the Amish or pulling commercial carriages in large citie, others are victims of abuse, starvation, and neglect. Volunteers work in a HANDS-ON manner every day to care for these horses from their initial Rescue through rehabilitation, retraining, and rehoming. While you do not have to have experience with horses, you will be near them and handling them from day one. We train our volunteers to safely handle our horses. We have a high standard for the care of our horses and we expect your best efforts in providing that care. Our volunteer program also requires a lot of independence and critical thinking. Duties include: feeding, mucking stalls, watering, walking horses to and from pastures and barns, grooming, medicating, and general horse handling regardless of the weather. Volunteer opportunities also exist for those interested in administrative work, construction and maintenance, and landscaping. Riding opportunities may be available to volunteers who can commit to 20 hours /month.
