CASA New Orleans (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is an agency which advocates on behalf of children (birth to 18 ) who have been judged victims of abuse and/or neglect. Although CASA is a volunteer position, the duties carried out by a CASA are extremely important. Along with a sincere commitment, volunteers must be responsible, articulate and mature. No special education or skills are required. Thorough training and continual support is provided. Are you ready to become one of these special people? Requirements to be a CASA are: Approximately 10-20 hours a month of volunteering (The time commitment to a case varies depending upon the stage of the case.) Commitment of at least 1 year duration; preferably until your case closes (Volunteers are always welcomed and encouraged to take another case once their case closes!) Minimum age of 21 Preferable to have a flexible schedule and access to a car (Foster homes, schools, and doctors offices, etc. are not all easily accessible through public transportation) Successful completion of pre-service requirements which includes 36 hours of pre-service training (spread out over 4 weeks), an application, in-person interview, three references, a national and local criminal background check, and child abuse and neglect registry checks. If you have the heart and the commitment, join this select group of CASAs and represent a child's best interests; interact with families, foster parents; appear in Juvenile Court; coordinate with the child's school, therapists, social workers and more.
