Mentors Can Help East Bay Students Graduate!

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Be A Mentor, Inc.

Have you been hearing about high dropout rates and been thinking that there has to be something you can do to help?

There is: Mentoring! It's been proven time and again that spending time with teens, one-to-one, will help them build a path for a healthier, more successful future.

A "big brother"- or "big sister"- type relationship will lead to a lower likelihood of experimentation with drugs, drinking before age 21, and other at risk behaviors. Plus, youths with mentors have more consistent rate of academic performance, attendance at school, and stay on track to graduate compared to unmentored youths.

As we can all remember, being a student in middle or high school can be very scary. So intimidating, in fact, that many 9th-graders drop out in their first semester.

We need mentors for Richmond, Berkeley and Oakland teens, to encourage students as they take on work and have more pressure from new friends and programs. Support and befriend them so that they may ultimately be able to graduate and go onto become successful adults.

How does it work?

  • Mentors spend minimum of 8 hours per month together
  • Focus on schoolwork
  • Go to movies
  • Sporting events or museums
  • Simply talk and be a trusted friend

Description

The Be A Mentor Program pairs caring adult volunteers from the community with youth in one-to-one relationships. Mentors give of their time to be a friend, answering questions, and providing guidance. Mentors come from a variety of backgrounds and occupations and volunteer their personal time to be a caring friend to a youth. They serve as a role model, advocate, and resource. The purpose of the mentoring relationship is to help youth develop their full potential, both in and outside of the classroom.
