Arlington Works! AmeriCorps in Arlington, Virginia seeks a team of 8 full-time AmeriCorps members for the 2016-2017 program year (Beginning on or about September 1, 2016). These members will provide educational services that assist low-income immigrants in gaining skills needed for greater economic and academic success.

Emerging Leaders (ELP) Facilitators co-lead the 3-part Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) in Arlington, Falls Church, and Fairfax. ELP 1 and 2 (College preparation) are designed to prepare Hispanic and other immigrant youth for college and develop leadership skills through group and individual mentoring sessions. ELP 3 is designed to assist middle school children in developing their mathematical, technical, and scientific skills through participation in a Robotics Club.

Core Responsibilities: Co-manage the organization and operation of ELP 1, 2, 3 in Arlington, Falls Church, and Fairfax, Virginia.

  • Plan and conduct ELP 1 & 2 (College Preparation) and ELP 3 (Robotics) activities that help students build strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Maintain & develop curriculum in coordination with Edu-Futuro staff
  • Lead ELP marketing and outreach
    • Recruit students, mentors, and volunteers
    • Engage established and new community partners in supporting ELP activities, including middle and high school administrators as well as college admissions’ staff
  • Train and support ELP mentors and other volunteers
  • Plan and facilitate ELP 1 workshops on weekday evenings and Saturdays to help students develop academic and leadership skills needed for higher education
  • Work one-on-one with ELP 2 high school seniors (ELP 1 graduates) to coach them through the college and scholarship application process on a weekly basis (for the 2016-2017 academic year)
  • Plan and facilitate weekday after-school Robotics Club meetings and if applicable, coordinate Robotics team to enter local and regional robotics competitions
  • Organize youth events, such as community service, field trips, college visits, and graduation ceremonies
  • Plan and conduct workshops for parents of ELP students; topics include financial aid, scholarships, and college options
  • Maintain & report accurate participant & volunteer data (attendance, progress, completion), and keep track of program’s expenses for meals and supplies
  • Participate fully in all team responsibilities

SHARED TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES: In addition to core service responsibilities, members work together on planning community service and other events and participate in regular team activities (meetings, training, reporting, and evaluation activities). Members also -

  • assist REEP & Edu-Futuro with recruiting participants and volunteers as well as with enhancing & expanding programming, curriculum, student services, resources, and capacity,
  • promote Arlington Works! and AmeriCorps, and
  • assist job seekers and teach basic computer skills to adults.

TRAINING AND ORIENTATION: Members receive intensive training at the beginning of the service year as well as training, mentoring, and support throughout the year.

Initial team training includes:

  • Team building and service expectations, including prohibited activities
  • Orientation to AmeriCorps, REEP, Edu-Futuro, and Arlington Works!
  • Working with the immigrant population
  • Class observations
  • Position-specific training, e.g. teaching ESOL, working with youth
  • Timesheets and reporting requirements, including Arlington Works! performance measures

Ongoing training includes recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers, promoting civic participation and national service, leadership development, emergency preparedness, and Life After AmeriCorps.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ELIGIBILITY

  • Available full-time (1700 hours; ca. 36 hours/week) from on or about September 1, 2016 to on or about August 15, 2017
  • Must be able to serve 2-4 evenings/week and most Saturdays. ESOL Instructors also participate in occasional Friday evening training.
  • U.S. Citizen or permanent resident alien
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Passionate about teaching as well as serving the immigrant community
  • Excellent English & interpersonal skills; Spanish fluency helpful for Edu-Futuro positions
  • Some experience teaching and working with the foreign-born (desirable)
  • Access to a car helpful. Service activities are conducted throughout Arlington, Falls Church, and Fairfax.

Mission Statement

The Arlington Education and Employment Program (REEP) provides English classes to adults at convenient times and locations around Arlington. We also offer career development opportunities with English for child care provider classes, computer skills certification, and TOEFL preparation classes. Instruction at REEP includes language instruction, with U.S. culture, computer skills, community involvement, and workforce preparation integrated into the courses.

Description

Since 1975, REEP has helped more than 90,000 adult English language learners from more than 90 countries. Our students come to us with the general goal of improving English in order to adjust to American society, but our services impact their lives as learners, citizens, family members, and workers. We provide English language training in a variety of settings and programs to accomodate all learners in various locations in Arlington,VA. In our Intensive Program, students study between 10 and 15 hours a week for 3-month cycles. The Outreach ESL Program provides free, drop-in style English classes at 3 community outreach centers in Arlington for those students unable to enroll in the more intensive programs of study.
