Arlington Works! AmeriCorps in Arlington, Virginia seeks a team of 8 full-time AmeriCorps members for the 2016-2017 program year (beginning on or about September 1, 2016). Eight full-time AmeriCorps members will provide educational services that assist low-income immigrants in gaining skills needed for greater economic and academic success.

ESOL Instructor Description

AmeriCorps ESOL Instructors typically teach 10-15 hours a week for 3 twelve-week semesters of intensive and non-intensive English classes. Intensive classes meet 10 hours/week in the mornings or evenings. Non-intensive classes meet 5 hours/week on Saturdays. Classes have managed enrollment with established start and end dates. Classes are held at the Syphax Education Center (REEP's main location) and REEP satellite sites- the Arlington Mill Community Center and Thomas Jefferson Middle School. During each 12-week semester, ESOL instructors can expect to teach a Saturday class as well as a morning or evening class.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Teach ESOL classes to adults using the REEP Adult Life skills ESOL Curriculum ( http://www.apsva.us/reep)
  • Plan & implement objectives-based, learner-centered English instruction that demonstrates best practices and integrates job skills and instructional technology
  • Teach basic computer classes to adult English language learners
  • Assess language learning needs and interests as well as abilities of learners
  • Maintain and report accurate student records on attendance and progress
  • Utilize volunteer teaching assistants to enhance student learning in the classroom
  • Participate in REEP teacher trainings and in-services throughout the year
  • Recruit, train, and support students and community volunteers for community service activities
  • Enhance and expand instructional programming, resources, and program capacity, e.g.
    • Update curriculum resources and other on-line resources
    • Develop instructional materials for use in adult ESOL instruction
  • Substitute for adult ESOL classes at multiple sites, days, and times (on an as-needed basis)
  • Participate fully in all team responsibilities

Shared Team Respnsibilities: In addition to core service responsibilities, members work together on planning community service and other events and participate in regular team activities (meetings, training, reporting, and evaluation activities). Members also -

  • assist REEP & Edu-Futuro with recruiting participants and volunteers as well as with enhancing & expanding programming, curriculum, student services, resources, and capacity,
  • promote Arlington Works! and AmeriCorps, and
  • assist job seekers and teach basic computer skills to adults.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ELIGIBILITY

  • Available full-time (1700 hours; ca. 36 hours/week) from on or about September 1, 2016 to on or about August 15, 2017
  • Must be able to serve 2-4 evenings/week and most Saturdays. ESOL Instructors also participate in occasional Friday evening training.
  • U.S. Citizen or permanent resident alien
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Passionate about teaching as well as serving the immigrant community
  • Excellent English & interpersonal skills; Spanish fluency helpful for Edu-Futuro positions
  • Some experience teaching and working with the foreign-born (desirable)
  • Access to a car helpful. Service activities are conducted throughout Arlington, Falls Church, and Fairfax.

Mission Statement

The Arlington Education and Employment Program (REEP) provides English classes to adults at convenient times and locations around Arlington. We also offer career development opportunities with English for child care provider classes, computer skills certification, and TOEFL preparation classes. Instruction at REEP includes language instruction, with U.S. culture, computer skills, community involvement, and workforce preparation integrated into the courses.

Description

Since 1975, REEP has helped more than 90,000 adult English language learners from more than 90 countries. Our students come to us with the general goal of improving English in order to adjust to American society, but our services impact their lives as learners, citizens, family members, and workers. We provide English language training in a variety of settings and programs to accomodate all learners in various locations in Arlington,VA. In our Intensive Program, students study between 10 and 15 hours a week for 3-month cycles. The Outreach ESL Program provides free, drop-in style English classes at 3 community outreach centers in Arlington for those students unable to enroll in the more intensive programs of study.
