Becoming We the People

When:

Schedule is currently negotiable, but it would have to be either after school/evening hours Monday through Thursday or Saturday morning.

We are looking for a tutor for geometry/math for a sophomore in high school. This is ongoing and we need someone immediately. Please be prepared to commit to an entire semester.

Your volunteer time would be one hour. If you cannot commit to all the time, but can be "on call," please let us know. Thanks!

The Details:

Sometimes the missing piece to success, whether in school or in employment goals, is support. The Learning Center provides people to support participants in their education and employment goals. We started this Learning Center (and hope to have more hours and locations in the future) because the more we can help people learn how to critically think and accomplish their goals, the more people there will be that can help to fix the problems of the world. We like that idea and hope you do, too! So far, every student that has participated in tutoring at our Learning Center has seen improvement in his/her grades and/or skills. Some of the students have seen significant improvements after just two sessions!

The Learning Center currently operates at Kempo Jujutsu Martial Arts Academy at 8929 Indianapolis Blvd. Second Floor, Highland, IN 46322.

How our tutoring works:

We are not only tutoring students, but we are trying to teach them to be excited about learning. We incorporate games, sports, and other activities (depending on the students’ interests) in order to keep the students interested and to reward them for putting extra effort into their learning by attending tutoring.

What we need:

We are looking for tutors in all subjects and at any level, K-college. We are open to having tutors of almost any age. We pair you with a student based on your knowledge and the level of the students. We will take high school, middle school, and college students as students. We would also love professionals, retired workers, or just about anyone! We want our students to have a variety of tutors and mentors to work with.

We are also interested in eventually offering certain test preparation help, such as GED prep or SAT and ACT. If you are interested in this, please let us know!

What we offer our volunteers:

For our volunteers, we try to offer as much as we can. We will offer refreshments while you’re here. We are also willing to help with recommendations, job searching, career counseling, etc. Not only will you be tutoring, but you will get to break it up with games and activities as needed.

Please contact us at info@becomingwethepeople.org. Thanks for your interest and we look forward to meeting you!

Mission Statement

We are an organization rooted in working toward equality. Equality meaning that all people have the rights stated in our Declaration of Independence, the rights to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. One step further is that every person should have an equal footing toward obtaining the things that are essential to sustaining life- food, water, shelter, clothing, and further, education, healthcare and employment.

Description

  • We are an organization rooted in working toward equality.
  • Our first goal is ending poverty in the United States, beginning in the Chicago area. Why? There is no reason poverty should exist in the "richest" country in the world. It is a direct result of inequality- not everyone has access to all the same opportunities- education, employment, etcetera. As for the Chicago area, we realize to accomplish a goal so big, we have to start small. There is no better place to begin than a richly diverse city, historically resistant to change. Our thought is, if change can happen here, it can happen anywhere. Including around the world, especially in parts of Africa where it is needed most.
  • We see our organization as a part of a movement that was started in the 1960's but seemed to lose momentum with the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At the end of his life, he formulated a plan for the "Poor People's Campaign". It didn't really have a chance to run, so we're taking a similar path and running with it.
