ORGANIZATION: National MS Society - Gateway Area Chapter

Position Summary:

The Community Outreach Intern will work with the Volunteer Community Outreach Coordinator to administer the 1,600 plus volunteers the agency utilizes. The intern will assist with human resources related tasks including the recruitment, screening, and administration of the volunteer and internship processes during our major event season.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Maintain recruitment databases to ensure all volunteer and internship opportunities are accurate and up-to-date (VolunteerMatch, United Way, all Universities/College websites)
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers for all major events (Walk MS, Challenge Walk MS, MuckFest MS, Bike MS)
  • Assist with the interview process for all prospective volunteers and interns
  • Write material for month volunteer e-newsletter
  • Maintain the "Volunteer Center" portion of the website
  • Upkeep the electronic and physical files for agency volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Other responsibility may be delegated according to the intern’s career aspirations and professional goals

Qualifications:

  • Positive, outgoing individual with great interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated volunteer experience preferred
  • Extensive verbal and written communication skills
  • Data entry and customer service experience is a must
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks is a must
  • Ability to work independently
  • Must be able to attend events that take place during your intern semester, some evening and weekend hours would be required
  • Drive: initiative to take a project and make it their own
  • Ability to work efficiently with little supervision

Time Commitment and Stipend:

14 to 16 hours a week during the regular business hours of Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5pm, with the exact days and times to be determined according to intern schedule. An education stipend is awarded to those who complete 100-600 hours per semester. (The average is $500/240 hours of service), this amount is applied directly toward tuition.

Description

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society funds more MS research, offers more services for people with MS, provides more professional education programs and advances more MS advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world. Through its home office and nationwide network of chapters, the National MS Society provides assistance to over a million people annually in its continuing mission to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis.

Seeking volunteers to the MS cause is the very core of our business. Each year the Society organizes a series of community events that provide many opportunities for the enthusiastic volunteer. The Society offers four key fund-raising activities:

  • Bike MS
  • Walk MS

The Society also engages volunteers to help influence lawmakers at the federal, state and municipal levels toward legislation important to people living with MS. The Society is looking for passionate volunteers with expertise in areas such as:

  • Marketing/Communications
  • Public relations
  • Corporate and donor development
  • Medical, legal, administrative.
