Serving Lake and Sumter Counties

We are a non-profit organization that provides scholarships, mentors and hope to low income, at-risk youth in Lake and Sumter Counties.

The purpose of a trained, school based mentor is to show the student that someone cares which in turn helps that student become a productive citizen in their community. Without the guidance and personal commitment of a volunteer mentor in their lives many of these students would have no one to turn to for help in making better academic and life choices. Students who have gone through this program unanimously have credited their mentor for keeping them focused and helping them succeed through difficult personal times. Many of the mentor/mentee associations have continued well after high school graduation.

One of the key and proven success factors for the program is the role of the mentor. Studies in the area of mentoring conclude that when matched with a caring adult mentor, at-risk, underprivileged children are more likely to attend and stay in school, remain crime and drug-free and pursue a college education.

Description

Take Stock in Children (TSIC), a statewide Mentor/Scholarship program is to end the cycle of poverty through education by providing deserving, financially at-risk students the opportunity to earn a college scholarship. Many students have great potential but do not have the support at home and are sometimes overlooked in our school systems to achieve their best. What sets this early intervention program apart from others is: extensive support, motivation and accountability, along with the dollar for dollar match provided by the State of Florida. Over 26,000 students throughout the state of Florida have earned a college scholarship through the TSIC program. Since 1996 in Lake and Sumter Counties TSIC participants include 5 students who have earned their PhD, 17 students who have earned their masters degrees, 245 students who have earned a college degree, 242 who are currently enrolled in college and 188 high school students who are beginning their journey.
