Volunteer will assist nursing staff with tasks listed below, in order to free staff for other duties.
- Making beds, tidying rooms
- Delivering mail to patient rooms
- Clerical duties as assigned
- Distributing communication fliers
- Provide support for patients through sitting and listening, reading or any mutually agreed upon recreational activity.
- Help patients read mail, write letters
- At direction of nurse: transport patients to therapies
- Dysphagia group, meals, support groups and other groups
- Transport patients to feeding areas, assist only patients who are on a regular diet with food selection, carry tray, assist with tray set-up, open food containers.
- Set up games for patients/play games with patients as time and other duties permit. Encourage patients to attend diversionary activities and transport them to activities.
- Fill patients' water pitchers.
- Update white boards under direction of nurse
- Assist nurse with flagging patient chair
Limitations: Volunteers may NOT
- Feed patients, unless specifically directed and trained by staff to do so.
- Perform patient transfers.
- Assist patients with toileting or grooming.
Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to successfully perform required tasks in efficient and appropriate fashion.
Training: General orientation will be provided by Volunteer Services staff.
Orientation to the nursing floors and the training for specific tasks (such as bedmaking) will be provided by nursing staff.
Orientation will be provided by a Food & Nutrition Services staff member for volunteers working for Nursing in the cafeteria.
Dress Code: Scrubs or appropriate business casual clothes. No large earrings or long nails: groomed hair; appropriate footwear; low heel, no open heels or open toed shoes, no jeans or ripped clothing.

About Magee Rehabilitation Hospital
Magee Rehabilitation Hospital is nationally recognized for its outstanding programs in physical and cognitive rehabilitation, with comprehensive services for spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputation, and orthopedic injuries.
Magee has been rated as one of America's leading rehabilitation hospitals in U.S. News & World Report's annual "America's Best Hospitals" rankings. Accredited by The Joint Commission and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), Magee was the first facility in the nation to be CARF-accredited in brain injury rehabilitation.
Magee, in conjunction with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, serves as the federally designated Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Delaware Valley. One of only 14 such centers in the country.
Inpatient services are delivered at Magee's main campus located at Sixteenth & Race Streets in Center City Philadelphia. Outpatient programs are delivered through Magee's outpatient network, including the Magee Riverfront outpatient center at 1500 South Columbus Boulevard, Magee at Watermark in Center City, and Magee at Oxford Valley.
